Week 02

For the next stage of modeling the Box Office, I wanted to tackle the curtains in the reference images by using Ncloth simulation in Maya. The cloth dynamics serve as a base for future alteration.

In the play blast of the sim, I used two hooks as passive colliders to get a starting shape close to a tied back curtain. I choose aesthetic frames to cache out to continue adding detail.

Below are five meshes I choose from the sim cache that I imported back into the scene as an OBJ file.

Implementing feedback from the first draft; the proportions of the height were reduced to fit the photogrammetry scan better. I added a high poly version of the two curtains and altered the mesh with soft select to fit the window better.

January 19th:

Final pass on the Box Office proportions. The model fits the photogrammetry scan provided by Ben Gilbert. This allows me to start fine details and the interior.

Improvements were made to the curtains by sculpting on the mesh in Zbrush. A test satin material was applied for visualization.

I finished the hero door models and retopologized them. The right hand door has a backside for animation, and the left door does not have a backside for render optimization.

While working I noticed the original box office work in progress model had an abundance of asymmetrical geometry. I spent a few hours trying to recover the mesh until I decided it would be faster to re-make it. The new booth pictured below is now fully symmetrical with good topology. The exterior is in a finished state while the interior still needs some more work.

The interior of the ticket booth will have 3 mid-res essential props on the shelf;

- ticket spool

- ticket punch machine

- cash register (arbitrary time accurate piece selected to match the door handles)

Thinking ahead for the curtain texture, I looked through a library of tillable patterns to add an interesting depth to the velvet. Below is a reference, although with less contrast between the pattern and base velvet color.

Miranda had designed the tickets using the real logo found in the Savannah Tribune articles. I printed the hero ticket props on a photo folder from 1957. I sanded the edges and lightly stained them with walnut ink.
